Kamdyn crawling on hands and knees!

For most of us who have a kid with Down syndrome, you know that being in the hands and knees position is something that the PT starts working on as a young baby.  They lay them over their legs and put them in a hands and knees position.  Thy work on kneeling.  When the child starts army crawling, they try to be sneaky and transition their little body into a hands and knees position.

And if your child is like Kamdyn, they immediately threw themselves into a prone position on the floor while grunting in displeasure.  Or they threw their head back and arched their tiny frame in a full
-on toddler tantrum.  Oh, yeah, it was so much fun.  NOT!

Honestly, I had almost given up on the whole quadraped, as the specialists like to call it.  Not because I wasn't expecting.  I just didn't want to focus on the "not's".  So I took quadraped crawling, I balled it up, and I threw it up to the sky and let be what would be.  It was pretty obvious that Kamdyn wasn't going to cooperate in practicing that skill, and I was ok with however it worked out.

Then, a few months ago, Kamdyn's PT started working on crawling up the steps with her.  At first, it was awkward, and we were doing most of the movements.  After about a month, she was pretty much crawling from step to step on her own, with our hand on her bottom for support.  Just like with everything else, I don't think learning to crawl up the steps was the magic key that opened the door to quadraped crawling.  During that time, all of the skills and motions were working together.

And one day, about a month ago (around 19 months), she did it.  It was only one "crawl step" the first time, and each week that passed, she added more and more.

These videos were taken a couple of weeks ago.

By the way, it was my son's idea to wear the tie with his pajamas.

Now, just 6 days from hitting the 21 month mark, she is mostly quadraped crawling.  I'm hoping that as she uses her arms and shoulders to crawl, she will gain the strength needed to pull to standing.  That is our next big goal.

P.S. I found a solution to my blank, white screen issue that I mentioned before.  If you're having that problem too, check out the update on the previous post.

  1. Yay for Kamdyn. Good job on waiting this one out, Tricia. You hear again and again that "our kids" will do these things when they're ready. But sometimes it's easy to forget. So happy she's moving along.

  4. well that is encouraging! I had just about given up on Reagan crawling too as she is REALLY good at planting herself firmly face-down on the carpet to avoid quadraped, however she is doing the same thing...adding one crawl-step at a time and if she follows in Kamdyn's crawl-steps she'll get there really soon. And I just have to repeat it (for the 100th time)...Kamdyn is sooooo cute!
