When Kamdyn was born, like most new parents, I read article after article about what Down syndrome meant. Some made me feel hopeful. Some made my stomach drop with words like "mental retardation". I also read the health guidelines and the milestone charts, and afterwards, I would think, I don't care what this chart says. My kid is going to blow these charts out of the water. We are going to work, and I'm going to push her, and she's going to be great. Oh my, did I ever have some things to learn!
Along with that, I also had dreams that she would be the one to "change the world". I'm sure many of us have thought or felt that way. So we write, we raise money, maybe we serve on the board of our local Down syndrome group, but most importantly, we love our child.
We push when there needs pushing, stay on top of medical appointments, go to therapy appointments, take a break and cancel appointments when down-time is needed, go to IEP meetings, push for services.
But most importantly, we love our child.
And while all that is going on, maybe nobody notices your writing, maybe you get tired of pushing for services that you feel like should be a no-brainier. And maybe you feel like it all goes unnoticed.
But I'm here to tell you that you are making a difference. You are making ALL the difference in your child's life.
No one can do what you're doing, friend.
Maybe my child's face will never be seen by the masses, maybe she won't "change the world", but I can tell you this, she is changing MY world. She has changed me, and she has made an impact in those who she has met. And nobody touches the same people that you are. We are all making an impact.
So go. Go change the world. Go change your world.
And together,
we WILL change the world.
