Yesterday we went to the Imagine the PossAbilities conference in Philadelphia, PA. Karen Gaffney, Sujeet Desai, David Egan, and Brad Hennefer teamed up in the opening portion, where they each spoke. Then, we were broken up into smaller groups where we attended a workshop with each one and their parents. It was open to discussion and questions for each speaker, as well as their parents.
Karen Gaffney speaks freely and openly about having Down syndrome, and how that affects her life. I was able to ask her when she understood that she, in fact, has Down syndrome, and if this ever made her feel sad or alone. She said she remembers the day her parents told her, when she was about 4 years old. And, you know what?
She said she was never sad about it. I think between the very apparent, strong family bond, and support and confidence that has been instilled in Karen, she never viewed her disability as disABLING. She always felt like she could and she would, never she can't. I love that!
Our favorite speaker was Brad Hennefer. Growing up with soccer cleats attached to my feet at all times, I can relate to a guy who LOVES basketball and golf. His story is inspiring, and his family was great too. This guy has a 3 point shot that you wouldn't believe.
His father told a story about Brad playing golf on the varsity team in High School, because he was that good. Another coach asked his Dad what Brad's golf handicap was. His dad said, "Ask Brad. He will tell you." So the coach walks over to Brad and says, "Brad, what's your handicap?"
And Brad says, "Down syndrome. What do you think?" Ha Ha Ha. What an answer.
This conference gave me a hope for Kamdyn's future that I cannot even describe. A hope that we can do this.
